As you may know, Seiko has launched two special edition models (Turtle and a GMT Kinetic) of their dive watches this year. This special edition was created with collaboration with PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors). K & L WATCH revealed that the PADI special edition lineup is going to grow by at least four more models, including Sumo and Tuna!
The release of Seiko Turtle SRPA21 PADI special edition was definitely a huge success, and the watch become an instant classic. It was just a matter of time before Seiko and PADI decide to expand their lineup to other classic dive watches. First of all, the new collection will include a Seiko Sumo PADI edition ref. SBDC049. It’s going to have a blue bezel insert and a sunray blue dial with red accents. The color scheme seems to be in line with previous models; although, there is no pepsi bezel on the new Sumo. That’s a shame in my opinion as many people were hoping that Seiko will release a pepsi version of this one the most recognizable Seiko divers. Well, maybe next time.
The second watch of the new lineup is a PADI Tuna ref. SBBN039. It’s a classic quartz Tuna with 7C46 movement and 47 mm stainless steel case. It has a new style dial with modern triangle hour hand, the same you can find on SBBN031 Tuna. Of course, there are some blue and red color accents added to match the PADI theme. The most noteworthy change is the presence of blue shroud screws and a blue screwdown crown.
The third watch of PADI collection is going to be Seiko Solar diver, a regular version of which was introduced just this year (ref. SBDJ013). The PADI version has a ref. SBDJ015 and shares the same color scheme as the other watches: blue with red accents. I have to say that’s actually quite an attractive looking dive watch and I hope it will get more attention that his regular edition brother. As for the specs, it’s a 44 mm diameter case and 52.6 mm lug to lug. The watch is powered by a Seiko Solar V157 movement.
Ladies also haven’t been forgotten and for them Seiko together with PADI prepared a smaller version of a Solar diver, which measures 38 mm in diameter. The ref. of this watch is SBDN035. Other than the size, it’s literally the same watch as the previous solar diver, SBDJ015.
It’s not clear yet when and where the watches will be available. The MSRP is going to be 125000 JPY (~$1200) for SBBN039 Tuna, 70000 JPY for both Solar Divers (~$680) and probably 60000 JPY for PADI Sumo SBDC049 (~$580). It doesn’t take a genius to guess that at least new Sumo model will be highly sought after and had a chance to become another Seiko Diver classic.
