I’m full of admiration for the guys behinds EMG Watches. Anyone who tried to start a watch brand knows exactly how though it can be. You have to put a lot of work into your project and even then there is no guarantee that it will turn into a success. Luckily, EMG Watches have a reason to be proud. Their limited edition DL63 panda chronograph of 50 pieces has sold like hotcakes and now their are taking orders for another limited batch. But what made DL63 such a success?
I have heard about EMG Watches and their chronograph watch for the first time from their Instagram feed. However, they are present not only Instagram but also on Facebook and within the Watchuseek community. No wonder the initial batch of 50 pieces DL63 sold so quickly.
You have to give it a credit because it’s an eye catching design. 42 mm stainless steel case, 48 mm lug to lug and 13 mm thickness make it as close to ideal dimensions as possible. Beautiful panda style dial with a tachymeter inner bezel scale gives that watch that look of a vintage racing chronograph watches from the 70’s. The dial is also meticulously detailed with it’s raised markers and recessed matte black subdials. Both hands and small dots on the edges of hour markers are lumed with blue BGW9. To further emphasize this vintage appeal, the dial is protected by a domed mineral crystal. Unfortunately, it’s not a sapphire but that’s completely understandable considering the affordable price point.
The EMG Watches DL63 is powered by a Seagull ST1901 mechanical chronograph column wheel movement. We can definitely see the rise of popularity of this Chinese movement. Not so long ago, I wrote a post about G. Gerlach’s PZL P23 Karaś, which happens to use the same movement. And I think it’s a great trend. There are many interesting choices when it comes to affodable three-hander movements such as Seiko NH35 or Miyota 9015 but there is literally nothing in the chronograph departament besides Seagull ST1901. For a long time, it seemed that people didn’t put enough trust in these movements. Luckily, it’s getting used more and more by different microbrands. It’s a reliable and beautifully detailed mechanical movement, which features 30 minutes chronograph and power reserve of aprox. 42 hours.
The EMG Watches DL63 comes on a rally style perforated leather strap. That strap is 22 mm wide at the lug side and it tapers down to 18 mm at the buckle.
Although EMG Watches sold their initial batch of 50 watches, they are now taking orders for a second limited batch on their website. DL63 Panda Chronograph is priced at $320, which is a steal for the watch with such specs! For the initial batch of 50 watches, you can expect delivery in late May, the other batch should be ready shortly after.
